If you have had a positive pregnancy test and you are bleeding like a period, do not wait it out at home. Report any bleeding in pregnancy to a doctor or midwife the same day, so you can be assessed promptly.
Light spotting is different from heavy bleeding
Light spotting does occur in early pregnancy for some women. Implantation bleeding is normally light and brief — spotting, not a period-like flow.
Heavy bleeding is different. Soaking pads, passing clots, or bleeding like a period after a positive test is not something to wait out at home. It can be a sign of miscarriage, or of an ectopic pregnancy — a pregnancy outside the womb, which is an emergency.
Get urgent care immediately if you have
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe or one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain
- Shoulder-tip pain
- Dizziness or fainting
- Fever
Seek urgent care immediately if any of these apply. For any other bleeding in pregnancy, contact a doctor or midwife the same day.
What happens at assessment
Evaluation usually involves blood hCG tests and an ultrasound. You cannot judge the cause yourself from symptoms alone. Many women understandably feel frightened at this point — prompt assessment is the right step, whatever the outcome.
